Seun Kuti, the son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, recently shared a fascinating account of how his father inspired the white women around him to embrace African culture.

Speaking during an Instagram live session, Seun highlighted Fela’s unwavering identity and influence on the people in his life, emphasizing his impact on cultural exchange.

According to Seun, Fela Kuti welcomed both Nigerian and white women into his home during his lifetime. However, instead of changing his ways to fit societal norms or impress the white women, Fela’s authenticity and deep connection to African culture influenced them to adopt African styles and practices.

Seun recounted:

“My father had white women in his house. When I grew up, there were like two white women at least living with us. Instead of Fela to wear a suit and tie so that the white women would see him as fine, the women were the ones who started wearing shrine regalia and African hairstyles.”

Seun explained that Fela’s self-awareness and pride in African heritage inspired others to appreciate and adopt the culture.

“Fela never changed because of them, but they changed because of him. He already knew who he was and his love for Africa.”
