Sha’Carri Richardson achieved the fastest time in the women’s 100m at the US Championships held in Eugene, Oregon, on Thursday.
The 23-year-old set a world-leading time of 10.71 seconds, which also counts as a personal record.
Richardson’s notable performance puts her ahead of competitors and strengthens her chances of qualifying for the World Championships in Budapest next month.
Although her previous record of 10.57 seconds in April was disregarded due to wind assistance, her recent performance highlights her potential.
Richardson has earned a place in the semi-finals following her lead against Brittany Brown by 0.25 seconds. She also managed to outdo Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou’s world lead of 10.75 seconds.
Richardson was expected to become one of the Olympic Games’ main attractions in Tokyo in 2021 after winning the women’s 100 meters at the US trials.
However, she was disqualified from participating due to a positive cannabis test and a one-month ban. Richardson explained that her actions were influenced by the mourning process over her mother’s death.
Although Sha’Carri could not compete in last year’s World Championships, she is poised to make a strong comeback. Particularly in this year’s event which is her first global competition. Her outstanding performance at the US Championships will act as a trial for the World Championships.
