Media personality Shade Ladipo has shared a piece of advice with her female followers about changing their surname after getting married.
In a heartfelt message on her Instagram story, she expressed relief over not hastily changing her name during her marriage, emphasizing the importance of preserving the personal brand she had built over 20 years.
Ladipo questioned the idea of altering a name that had taken decades to establish, especially when it comes to legal documents. She urged women to take their time and not feel pressured to change their surname immediately after marriage.
Do you want to know 1 thing? I’m so happy I didn’t rush to when I was married. Changing my name. How did I spend over 20 years building the Shade Ladipo brand to change it overnight to another name? Some people see my father and say, ‘Oh, you’re Shade Ladipo’s Father?’ Sis, you worked too hard to build your brand; don’t be too quick to change it, especially on legal documents. Take your time; there’s no hurry, I promise you!”
This advice follows Ladipo’s candid revelation months earlier during an interview with Daddy Freeze, where she disclosed her separation from her husband post-COVID-19 lockdown. Despite the challenges, she announced in April that she is ready to give marriage another shot, sharing her excitement with followers by posting a video of a surprise engagement setup.
Ladipo has consistently advocated for women to make thoughtful decisions regarding marriage. In 2022, after the wedding of Nollywood actress Rita Dominic at the age of 47, Ladipo advised against rushing into marriage, highlighting that marriage is not an achievement to be attained hastily in one’s 30s. She encouraged women to choose their paths and embrace them fully.
With her latest message, Shade Ladipo continues to inspire women to make informed and deliberate choices about their personal and professional identities, regardless of societal pressures.
