A vehicle accident on the Ibadan-Oyo Motorway in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State on Saturday resulted in the death of six people, with 14 others injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the 18-passenger white Toyota Hummer bus with registration plate Lagos JJJ 941 XA drove off at the famed Akinyele market in Akinyele Local Government, Ibadan, before suffering a tyre rupture and losing control.

The occupants of the bus, who were all guys, were heading to the country’s north before the disaster.

When our correspondent visited the Federal Road Safety Corps’ Atiba Unit Command, the unit commander, Bayode Olugbesan, verified that four people perished before the corps members arrived. Simultaneously, responders conveyed the injured to Oyo State General Hospital.

Olugbesan attributed the disaster to speeding and overloading and confirmed that 20 people sustained injuries. He added that the mortuary had received the bodies.

He stated, “All the victims are male, and their destination is North. The cause of the crash was speeding and overloading. The bus was supposed to carry 14 passengers but was loaded with 20 passengers”.

As a result, the unit commander recommended that drivers be cautious when driving to avoid speeding, overloading, and travelling at night.

According to a senior medical officer at the state hospital in Oyo, who did not want her name printed said, “The road safety officials brought 15 victims (injured ones) to the hospital, but two of them have given up the ghost after we administered first aid on them.”
