Sonia Ogiri has taken to Instagram to set the record straight regarding accusations of her having a failed career in Nollywood.
The actress, who recently stirred controversy with her comments towards colleague Iyabo Ojo, provided a detailed explanation of her departure from the Nigerian film industry a decade ago.
Ogiri explained that her decision to leave Nollywood was not due to a lack of roles or inability to succeed. She emphasized that she was thriving in the industry before making the conscious choice to seek greener pastures for the sake of her child’s future.
In her Instagram post, Ogiri wrote,
Let me address this real quick. I left the Nigerian film industry 10 years ago. I didn’t leave because I wasn’t getting jobs; I’m a go-getter. I didn’t leave because I wasn’t a good actor. I didn’t leave because I couldn’t fit into the lifestyle. Those who knew, know that I was well-established before I entered Nollywood.”
Ogiri highlighted that her primary motivation was to provide her child with a better life, education, and opportunities than she had. She made it clear that her decision was driven by her desire to be a responsible mother and ensure her child’s well-being and future success.
Today, I have achieved that and more. My child can travel the world without stress. He now has alternatives just in case. He has everything better than I had, which should be the norm. Our children shall be greater than us,” she stated.
Addressing those who have labeled her a failed actress, Ogiri confidently responded,
Did I regret leaving Nollywood? NO. I’m a better person, more exposed, more skilled, more experienced, more hardworking. I have more achievements and knowledge. I can travel the world. So help me do the math.”
She also mentioned her intention to return to Nollywood once her child is settled, emphasizing that her focus on her child’s upbringing was of utmost importance. Ogiri’s message was clear: she chose what some may call “failure” wisely for the greater good of her child.
The JAPA you are planning and wishing for now at your old age is what I gave up my Nollywood career for, for my child at his early age. If most of your parents took care of your yesterday, you wouldn’t be miserable today. I hope you will plan better for your own children. The moral of my story is, choose your failure well,” she concluded.
Ogiri’s heartfelt post has resonated with many, offering a different perspective on her career choices and shedding light on the sacrifices she made for her family.
