Former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa has declared that the South-East Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holds more constitutional authority than any individual or faction supporting Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s continued claim to the office of National Secretary.
Udenwa made this statement during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he addressed the ongoing dispute surrounding the position.
He criticised the committee chaired by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, which upheld Anyanwu’s claim to the post. According to Udenwa, Anyanwu’s tenure effectively ended the moment he accepted the PDP nomination to contest the Imo State governorship election. By contesting that election, he argued, Anyanwu vacated the secretary position under the party’s guidelines.
Udenwa stressed that the South-East zonal executive committee has made its stance clear by nominating Sunday Ude-Okoye as the rightful National Secretary.
He noted that the caucus has submitted Ude-Okoye’s name three times, only to have the nomination repeatedly rejected by the party’s national leadership. He expressed frustration with the lack of acknowledgement, suggesting that their position is being deliberately undermined.
Responding to suggestions that powerful figures like Nyesom Wike are influencing decisions, Udenwa stated that while Wike is a respected member of the party and its National Executive Committee, his influence does not supersede that of the South-East Caucus.
He emphasised that no individual, regardless of their political weight, can override the constitutional powers of a zonal body.
The controversy underscores deepening internal conflicts within the PDP, as different factions vie for control and recognition. Udenwa’s remarks reinforce the determination of the South-East Caucus to uphold its constitutional rights and ensure fair representation in party leadership.
