Following a disappointing performance by Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), head coach Eric Chelle has publicly addressed the growing speculation surrounding his future.

The team’s early exit from the tournament, marked by losses in their opening two matches against Senegal and Sudan, has intensified scrutiny and led to calls for his dismissal from fans and analysts alike.

In an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Chelle confirmed he is aware of the rumours circulating about his potential sacking.

The coach acknowledged the precarious nature of his profession, stating that he understands the possibility of being relieved of his duties after a single poor result.

However, he issued a firm condition for any such action, emphasising that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) must be prepared to honour the financial terms of his agreement.

Eric Chelle made it clear that if the federation decides to terminate his employment, they are obligated to pay him the entirety of the remaining value of his contract.

This statement sets a definitive stance ahead of the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which are scheduled to begin in approximately two weeks.

The pressure is mounting on the NFF to make a decision, as the Nigerian public questions whether Eric Chelle remains the right person to lead the three-time African champions into the vital upcoming matches.
