Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed his admiration for newly appointed head coach Finidi George, heralding the legendary status of the former Ajax star. Troost-Ekong’s sentiments were shared with Soccernet.ng following George’s appointment as the successor to Jose Peseiro.
George’s selection comes after a distinguished career that included stints with Ajax and Real Betis, where he showcased remarkable goal-scoring prowess. Troost-Ekong praised George’s humility and highlighted his significant contributions to Nigerian football, particularly his recent success with Enyimba.
Reflecting on George’s impact at Ajax and Betis, Troost-Ekong emphasized the inspiration he derived from George’s achievements, citing his influential role both on and off the field. Despite his stellar career, George remains grounded, earning the respect and admiration of players and fans alike.
“George Finidi is a legend. In African football, and Nigerian football, even here in Greece, whenever ex-Nigerian players are mentioned, Finidi’s name always comes up. Especially growing up in Holland, just outside Amsterdam, for someone who played so much for Ajax and achieved so much there, he’s someone I look up to and feel very connected to,” Troost-Ekong was quoted by Soccernet.
“He is always very humble, too humble for what he has achieved. Everyone recognizes the work he did for Enyimba last year when he won the league. So, for him to now get the chance to be the interim head coach [now the full-time head coach], I am very happy to see that. He’s a great guy.”
The Super Eagles, under George’s leadership, are gearing up for crucial World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic. Troost-Ekong, nearing recovery from injury, eagerly anticipates returning to action under George’s guidance, underscoring the optimism surrounding the team’s future under their new coach.
