In a spectacular turn of events, Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar broke his 448-day goal drought in stunning fashion, propelling Real Sociedad to a 2-1 triumph against Sevilla in La Liga action on Sunday.
Umar, who had been sidelined due to an ACL injury last season, marked his return to the scoresheet with a moment of brilliance. The 26-year-old striker, struggling to regain his previous form since his summer comeback, justified the trust placed in him by Real Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil.
The game saw an early lead for Sociedad through an own goal from Marko Dmitrovic in the third minute. However, it was Umar’s rocket strike from over 35 yards out in the 22nd minute that stole the spotlight, doubling the lead to 2-0.
Despite Sevilla’s efforts to mount a comeback in the second half, with a goal on the hour mark, Umar’s impact remained undeniable. He made three goal attempts, executed two successful dribbles, and contributed 28 touches before being substituted for Benat Turrientes in the 75th minute.
The dramatic encounter also witnessed late-game red cards for Sergio Ramos and Jesus Ramos in the 88th minute. Real Sociedad ultimately secured a 2-1 victory, with Umar’s goal ending his prolonged goal drought and making a significant contribution to the team’s success.
