Nigeria has reported 532 confirmed cases, including 124 deaths, out of 1,686 suspected cases of meningitis, with a case fatality rate of 7%. From 1 October 2022 to 16 April 2023, 81 local government areas in 22 states, including the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, reported cases.
The UK has added Nigeria to its red list of countries. The list is a compilation of countries where health and social care employers should not actively recruit from. This comes a month after the World Health Organization listed 55 countries, including Nigeria, as the countries facing the most pressing universal health coverage challenges facing health workers.
