Eric Ten Hag has explained his decision to bench his top scorer Marcus Rashford even though the England international has recovered from illness and is available for selection.
Rashford didn’t play in the 1-0 victory against Bournemouth last weekend, but fans expected him to play on Thursday night against Chelsea. However, the manager has benched him, and instead, Jadon Sancho will start, with Anthony Martial and Antony completing the front three.
In his pre-match interview with Sky Sports, the boss commented on his Rashford choice:
I wouldn’t say [he is] only on the bench. I think Manchester United need a good bench with top players. He was, first, injured and then ill. He is now back. We are happy with that. For the last 10 days, we have three games to go, he’s back. He can do something from the bench but we have a strong team.”
Victory against Chelsea would ensure Ten Hag’s men move above Newcastle United into third spot in the Premier League.
