Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 29, the National Assembly (Senate and the House of Representatives) will meet in a joint session to commemorate 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria.

The inaugural session after the restoration to democracy in 1999 will feature paper presentations by distinguished Nigerians, including Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), a former head of state in the military.

The only time the two legislative chambers convene is when the President presents the yearly budget.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to give a speech at the joint sitting, according to a statement released by the National Assembly management on Monday evening.

As part of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary, the President is also anticipated to open the recently constructed National Assembly Library.

Along with other well-known residents, Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to be at the function.

Additional dignitaries anticipated at the function include Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq; Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodinma; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; and President Femi Gbajabiamila, as Chief of Staff.
