Tinubu inherited ‘this’ dead economy – Presidency replies New York Times

The Presidency has responded to a New York Times story claiming that Nigeria’s economy is on its worst path in a decade.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, responded on Sunday to the article attributed to Ruth Maclean and Ismail Auwal.

According to the Presidency, the feature story titled ‘Nigeria Confronts Its Worst Economic Crisis in a Generation’, published on June 11, reflected the typical predetermined, reductionist, derogatory, and denigrating way that foreign media establishments have reported African countries for decades.

The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy stated that due to the’misleading’ slant of the report, the government needed to clear up some misconceptions conveyed by reporters about the President Bola Tinubu administration’s economic policies, which took office at the end of May 2023.

He said one major part of the study was that it depicted the tragic experiences of numerous Nigerians during the previous year’s inflationary spiral and blamed it all on the new administration’s policies.

He also said that the research, which is based on multiple interviews, is at best tainted, all doom and gloom, because it never discussed the good parts of the same economy, let alone the ameliorative measures being adopted by the national and state governments.

Onanuga went on to suggest that Tinubu was not responsible for Nigeria’s current economic issues.

According to a presidential adviser, Tinubu inherited them.
