Carjacking on the highway cc. Insider

Carjacking, also called car hijacking, is a growing problem in cities around the world and is an increasing problem in Nigeria. Carjacking happens very quickly and unexpectedly. Basically, it happens in big and small cities, in daylight and nighttime. Rather than stealing parked cars, many violent criminals find it much easier to steal a car while the owner is inside with the keys in the ignition. What can you do to avoid being carjacked? Check out these tips according to various sources.

Know your neighbours

Knowing your neighbours will help you recognize if there is a suspicious vehicle or individual around.  If you see an unfamiliar person loitering or a strange vehicle cruising around in the neighbourhood, this is considered suspicious activity.

Check your mirrors for anyone possibly following you

If you think you are being followed, make false turns. If the driver behind you continues to pursue you, go to your nearest police station.

Avoid trouble spots and driving in unfamiliar areas

Avoid high crime areas, rural areas with less populated roads, and congested traffic spots.

Know how to react if your car is bumped from behind

Carjackers use a ruse called The Bump. They rear-end cars and steal them when the drivers get out to assess the damage and gather information. If your car gets hit from behind, only pull over and get out when you reach a safe, public place.

Be wary of people trying to get your attention

Carjackers try to take advantage of people’s empathy by creating ruses. If someone is flashing their lights and trying to wave you over to the side of the road or is appearing to be injured from an accident and is soliciting your attention, don’t stop

What to do when getting out of your car

Park in well-lighted areas, near sidewalks or walkways. Always avoid parking near large vans or trucks, or anything else that limits your visibility. Never leave valuables in plain sight; lock your car and take the keys. Even if you are rushed, look around before you exit your vehicle and stay alert to your surroundings.

What to do If carjacking happens to you

If the carjacker threatens you with a gun or other weapon, give up your car. Do not argue. Your life is worth more than your car. Get away from the area as quickly as possible. Furthermore, try to remember what the carjacker looked like sex, race, age, hair and eye colour, special features, and clothes. Also, remember the description of any vehicles involved – colour, make, model, and license plate. Report the crime immediately to the police.
