Renowned gospel singer Tope Alabi has come under the spotlight after she reportedly turned down a performance at Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin’s surprise birthday party.
The singer, who was said to have been paid N4 million by Lizzy’s fans, allegedly declined to step out of her car upon arriving at the venue, once she discovered who the celebrant was.
The news has since set social media buzzing with mixed reactions. Some praised Tope Alabi for standing by her personal convictions, while others criticized her for backing out of a commitment, especially after payment had been made.
A social media user, @Beebs_amala, questioned why Tope would carry someone else’s burden, saying, “But the two of them no get clash na. Why she carry another person matter for head?” Another, @Motolani_Arike, wrote, “Way to go! How can Tope Alabi sing for someone who openly curses children?”
While some defended the gospel artist’s decision, others noted that Lizzy Anjorin had always been a devoted fan of hers, which made the act even more disappointing.
In response, Lizzy Anjorin publicly addressed the issue, stating that she never personally invited Tope Alabi and was surprised her fans did. She emphasized that as a Muslim, she wouldn’t have chosen a gospel artist for her celebration. However, she expressed gratitude for the gesture and disappointment at the outcome.
Lizzy didn’t hold back in her reaction, reminding Tope Alabi of the times she supported her during past controversies, particularly her clash with the late Prophet Ajanaku. She questioned the gospel singer’s integrity and claimed she had done more for society than Tope.
I would never have used my money to pay Aunty Tope. My fans invited her. That N4 million could have helped beggars or covered hospital bills,” Lizzy stated. “Even when you had issues with Ajanaku and the world turned their back, I stood with you. You called me your sister yesterday, yet you stayed in your car. That was unfair.”
The drama adds to Lizzy Anjorin’s long history of public spats, most notably with fellow actress Iyabo Ojo. The two were involved in a legal battle after Lizzy accused Iyabo of promiscuity online. Despite court efforts to reconcile them, tensions lingered for years before a judge finally intervened, encouraging both women to stop trading insults and embrace peace.
In a past interview, Lizzy claimed she only reacts when provoked and that her public image as a businesswoman doesn’t allow for petty feuds. She maintained that most of her online battles were started by others.
