Nigerian actress Toyin Abraham has been embroiled in a fierce online battle with netizens since she declared her support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 Presidential Election.
Her unwavering support for the BAT movement earned her the moniker “Asiwaju Baby,” but also subjected her to relentless trolling, particularly on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The backlash reached a new peak when a troll involved her four-year-old son, Ire Ajeyemi, prompting Abraham to respond vehemently. She condemned the attacks on her family and defended her right to support any political candidate without being held accountable for their subsequent actions.
One tweet by user Big Ayo read, Mrs @toyin_abraham1 walai aiye e ti ta!! You collect Tinubu money use do hair transplant for your husband…. Stoppid fool.” Another user, Sir David Onyeamazu, remarked, “The way my belle sweet me when Daniel Regha told me how he snubbed Toyin Abraham, I almost wanted to give him a good hug. She doesn’t know that some people in this world understand what integrity means. She wanted to buy his voice, but got snubbed. E pain am. Olofo celeb.”
Toyin Abraham’s decision to support Tinubu during the election was not without its consequences. She claimed that Tinubu had shared ideas with her that she believed would benefit the country, a stance that has drawn significant criticism as many Nigerians feel these promises have not been fulfilled.
In an emotional Instagram live session, Abraham, in tears, vowed to pursue legal action against those trolling her family. She emphasized that she has always opposed bullying and has consistently cautioned her fans against such behavior. Despite her efforts to help others with the income from her cinema projects, the trolling has not ceased.
Her friend and colleague, Iyabo Ojo, along with other celebrities, offered support during the live session. Iyabo Ojo, known for her own strong stances, comforted Toyin with soothing words, urging her to stay strong amidst the backlash.
The controversy has not only affected Abraham’s public image but also strained her relationships with fellow celebrities. Notably, Toyin Abraham had a long-standing feud with Funke Akindele, which was fueled by their simultaneous movie releases and accusations of sabotage. However, the two actresses appeared to have reconciled when Abraham celebrated Akindele on her birthday last year.
