U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25 percent tariff on Colombian goods following a decision by Colombian President Gustavo Petro to block two U.S. military planes carrying deported migrants from landing in Colombia.

In a post on his official X page, Petro announced his refusal to allow entry to the planes, citing concerns over the treatment of Colombian migrants.

“The U.S. cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals. I deny the entry of American planes carrying Colombian migrants into our territory. The United States must establish a protocol for the dignified treatment of migrants before we receive them,” Petro stated.

U.S. officials revealed that the planes departed from San Diego and were scheduled to land in Colombia but were turned back due to the decision.

Reacting to the incident on Truth Social, Trump announced emergency tariffs on all imports from Colombia, effective immediately, with plans to increase them to 50 percent within a week.

In addition to the tariffs, Trump revealed plans for further punitive measures, including a travel ban and visa revocations for Colombian government officials.

He also warned of enhanced customs inspections for Colombian nationals and cargo, citing national security concerns.

The U.S. president criticized Colombia’s refusal to accept deported migrants, stating, “We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations regarding the acceptance and return of the criminals they forced into the United States.”
