Hundreds of students from the University of Ibadan (UI) staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday morning, expressing their frustration over the prolonged 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.
The UCH, a key teaching hospital for medical students from UI, has been grappling with persistent power supply issues due to outstanding debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
Reports indicate that IBEDC disconnected the hospital’s power supply in March 2024 due to unpaid electricity bills, following a similar disconnection in November 2023 for the same reason. Despite the passage of several months, the power supply has not been restored, leaving the hospital in a dire situation.
Students from the university voiced their dissatisfaction through a peaceful protest, highlighting the adverse impact of the outage on their academic training and the hospital’s operations.
“Our education and practical learning are being severely hampered. This situation is unacceptable, and we demand immediate action,” one of the protesting students stated.
The power outage has reportedly disrupted essential services at UCH, including medical care and research activities, further compounding the challenges faced by the hospital staff and patients.
The protesting students called on the relevant authorities to resolve the issue promptly, urging the hospital and the electricity distribution company to reach an agreement to restore power and ensure uninterrupted operations at the institution.
