Britain’s foreign minister, David Cameron, said Monday that the results of the Russian elections demonstrated “the depth of repression” under President Vladimir Putin.
The Kremlin hailed Putin’s sweeping re-election to a fifth term in power as “eloquent confirmation” of popular support.
However, Cameron, who stated on Sunday evening that the election was neither free nor fair, denounced the poll results as undemocratic.
According to him:
“These Russian elections starkly underline the depth of repression under President Putin’s regime, which seeks to silence any opposition to his illegal war (in Ukraine).
“Putin removes his political opponents, controls the media, and then crowns himself the winner. This is not democracy.”
