Stephane Sejourne, the French Foreign Minister, expressed hope on Monday that “China sends very clear messages to Russia” regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Sejourne said this at a press conference in Beijing after meeting with his Chinese colleague, Wang Yi.
The French Foreign Minister emphasised the importance of negotiating a long-term peace agreement with Ukraine.
He said:
“We are convinced that there will be no lasting peace if it is not negotiated with the Ukrainians.
“There will be no security for Europeans if there is no peace in accordance with international law.
“It is an essential issue for us, which is why France is determined to maintain a close dialogue with China.”
He stated that Beijing may play a “key role” in ensuring international law is upheld.
Sejourne’s journey to China is the second by a French foreign minister in less than six months, following his predecessor, Catherine Colonna, who went in November.
