Barcelona has terminated Samuel Umtiti’s contract, as manager Xavi no longer wants him at the club. The French defender moved to Barcelona from Lyon in 2016, and during his first few months in Spain, he produced outstanding performances. However, a series of injuries derailed the progress of the French defender, resulting in his decline in the club’s hierarchy.
They loaned out the former France international to Lecce last summer because he had enjoyed so little opportunity to showcase his skills on the field in recent seasons..
The club released a statement on its website saying,
“FC Barcelona and the player Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement for the release of the contract that the player had with the Club until the end of the 2025/26 season.
“FC Barcelona expresses its gratitude to Umtiti and wishes him luck and success in the future.”
