Dr Charles Eghweree, a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Benin, has advised Nigerian youths to participate in politics because they cannot afford to remain passive while critical choices affecting their future are made.
He made this statement on Thursday while delivering the keynote talk at an event organised by Frame Democracy for Political Science students at the University of Benin.
Eghweree, the Head of the Department of Political Science, stated that students’ failure to participate in politics at all levels permits untrained individuals to hold positions of leadership in the country.
He said:
“I have to urge the youths to take part in politics as failure to do so will allow unqualified people to assume leadership positions. They should not become onlookers in an endeavour they need to be actively involved in.
“For the youths to take their rightful place in the scheme of things and put the country on the right footing, they must ignite and develop their interest in politics.”
He stated that Chief Anthony Enahoro, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and other Nigerian nationalists were youths when they made their impact in national politics, and urged them to fix the country’s current political imbalance.
Noting that politicians have succeeded in exploiting poverty as a weapon against the public, he stated that individuals may change the situation by registering their preferred political party and gaining adherents.
