Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, is set to embark on a unique challenge as the club reached an agreement with the Cameroonian Football Federation for his departure date to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Onana could potentially play two matches in as many days, thanks to the coordinated efforts of both parties.
The agreement stipulates that Onana will join his international teammates in Ivory Coast immediately after Manchester United’s clash with Tottenham on January 14. Subsequently, he will be available for Cameroon’s AFCON opener against Guinea on January 15.
This strategic arrangement means that Onana will also be in contention for United’s FA Cup third-round fixture against Wigan on January 8. The goalkeeper, initially not expected to participate in the 2023 AFCON, came out of international retirement after negotiations between United and the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT).
Onana’s dual commitment presents a mental and physical challenge, with potential implications for United’s Premier League fixtures in case Cameroon progresses to the AFCON final on February 11. Nevertheless, the compromise reflects the willingness of both parties to find common ground, ensuring minimal disruption to Onana’s club commitments.
