Uriel Oputa Tells Fans to Stop Shaking Her Hands, Shares Shopping Encounter

Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Uriel Oputa, is making it clear—she’s done with unsolicited handshakes and unexpected fan behaviour.

In a recent Instagram story, Uriel expressed frustration after a fan stopped her during a shopping run to take a selfie. She explained that she wasn’t wearing makeup or dressed up, yet the fan insisted on snapping a picture. The situation escalated when the fan looked around for someone else to help take a better shot—then proceeded to offer a handshake.

Uriel reminded followers that she’s long been vocal about her dislike for shaking hands—not out of pride or rudeness, but because of what she’s witnessed, especially in healthcare settings.

“I genuinely believe some Nigerians are missing a few brain cells… You blocked me for a selfie, went hunting for a better photo, then still stretched out your hand to shake me? After I’ve said many times I don’t shake hands?”

She ended the story by calling on fans to respect her boundaries, saying their behaviour is “annoying” and urging them to “reboot” their thinking.

This isn’t the first time Uriel has spoken up on personal boundaries. Just weeks ago, she addressed the public on the importance of minding their business. She criticized the habit of people tapping into others’ blessings without knowing the sacrifices involved, urging them instead to stay focused on their own journey.

In that same message, she listed several life choices that are nobody’s business, including how one makes money, when they marry, or who they date—stating boldly that people don’t owe the public any explanations.

Uriel’s outspoken nature comes from a place of deep experience. As someone caring for a mother with dementia, she often speaks on health, caregiving, and emotional resilience. She once described caring for her mum as “the most challenging, heartbreaking, and rewarding role,” one that has taught her to forgive, slow down, and focus on what truly matters.

Earlier this year, she even offered to adopt a baby abandoned in Kogi State, promising to give the child a safe and loving home. Uriel has also given advice on relationships, warning women not to bend over backwards to prove their worth to men who already know what they want from day one.
