The Adamawa State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized 4,732.128 kilogrammes of hard narcotics.
Cannabis sativa or Indian hemp; methamphetamine, often known as Ice; cocaine; tramadol; exol-5; diazepam pills; codeine-based syrup; rohypnol tablet; and pentazocine injection were among the illegal narcotics recovered in the state within the last year.
Addressing reporters in Yola on Friday, at the start of a weeklong schedule of activities commemorating this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the state Commander of the NDLEA, Agboalu Samson, stated that the drug seizures recorded from June 2023 to May 2024 represent a 75 percent increase over the seizures recorded from June 2022 to May 2023.
He stated that, while the number of drug dealers in the state has decreased, the size of drug dealings has grown.
The NDLEA Commander cited an example of a case in which agency and sister agencies raided a property and discovered and confiscated 1,898 blocks of Cannabis sativa weighing 1,862 kilogrammes, or 1.9 tonnes.
He said that his command had detained 454 alleged hard drug traffickers over the course of the year, including 447 men and seven women.
He said the command’s prosecution efforts resulted in the conviction of 148 people, including 145 men and three women.
“The highest sentences handed down were between 10 and five years imprisonment, with the least being six months,” he added.
