The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has explained the reason behind his frequent inspections of ongoing projects across Abuja, saying it is necessary to keep contractors on their toes and ensure projects are delivered to standard.
Wike made this known in Abuja after inspecting several key infrastructure projects, including the three-kilometre road network in Giri District, the 16-kilometre Idu-Dei Dei Road along the Inner Northern Expressway, and the ongoing construction of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, among others.
The minister emphasised that regular on-site inspections were a crucial part of his responsibility, aimed at ensuring contractors meet the expected quality and completion timelines.
“As part of routine inspection, we always go round to see whether the contractors are doing what they’re supposed to do, and so far, we are happy with the level of work being done,” Wike said.
He stressed that it would be unwise for government officials to rely solely on reports from contractors or project managers, as physical assessment helps identify issues early and prevents potential embarrassment during project inaugurations.
“We cannot sit in offices and assume everything is fine. Part of our duty is to physically inspect the work and check the quality because if you don’t, you might be embarrassed on inauguration day — and by then, it would be too late,” he added.
Wike also commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for fulfilling its obligations by ensuring prompt payment to contractors, a move he said contributes to the steady pace of work across project sites.
