The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) has voiced its support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its anti-corruption campaign.

This comes as the Supreme Court has deferred a decision on the EFCC’s constitutionality challenge brought by 19 other governors.

Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, chairman of the forum and governor of Kwara State, announced this promise during the 2024 National Cybercrime Summit in Abuja.

The conference was organized by the EFCC in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (ROLAC) and the European Union.

The summit’s subject is “Alternative to Cybercrime: Optimising Cyber Skills for National Development,” which focuses on improving digital skills as a method for combating cybercrime.

The chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum called for collaboration on cyber security in the country to boost national growth.

Abdulrazaq stressed the need to change public perceptions of crime.

He applauded the EFCC, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) for educating young Nigerians about criminality, drug misuse, and patriotism.

He said:

“You have our full support in this endeavour. I am impressed with what the EFCC, NDLEA, and NOA are doing in the new media and our basic schools to dissuade young people from engaging in crimes, and drug abuse, and to promote patriotism.

”This effort should be elevated so that we can achieve a national consensus on the behaviours that form the foundation of our cultural legacy as Nigerians.

“We also commend the EFCC for organising this summit. I am confident that, after this gathering, we will be better informed and more motivated to improve the public’s perception of cybercrime.”
