Nollywood actor and former presidential aspirant Yul Edochie is once again in the eye of the storm—this time for his tribute to late American wrestler, Hulk Hogan.

On Thursday, reports confirmed that the wrestling legend had passed away at age 71 following a cardiac arrest. Reacting to the news, Yul took to his Instagram to mourn him, sharing a short post that read:

“This one pain.
What a life.
He was our childhood hero.
Rest well, Legendary Hulk Hogan.”

But the post didn’t sit well with many Nigerians, who quickly flooded his comment section with criticism. Fans accused Yul of faking emotions and chasing clout, especially in light of his previous comments about death and grief.

“See this one, clueless man,” one user wrote.
“You said losing your son was the best year of your life, but Hulk Hogan’s death pain you?” another asked.
“You didn’t mourn Uncle Tom, but you’re here doing long throat for foreign stars,” a follower added.

The backlash stems from Yul’s own history of controversial statements. After losing his son in 2023, Yul had described that same year as his “best ever”—a comment that many found insensitive. His critics haven’t forgotten.

Beyond mourning foreign icons, Yul has made headlines for several contentious takes. Earlier this year, he attributed the rising deaths in Nollywood to Nigerians abandoning traditional values in favour of western ways. He urged the public to return to their roots as a solution to societal and spiritual decline.

He’s also known for airing unpopular opinions—like blasting people who send voice notes without asking, and frequently encouraging fans to block anyone that affects their peace.

Recently, actress Queeneth Hilbert took things a notch higher by publicly calling Yul a “polygamous faggot” in a now-deleted post. Her outburst echoes ongoing frustrations within Nollywood over Yul’s choices and behaviour.

Yul’s public image took a major hit after he married his colleague Judy Austin, a move that led to the breakdown of his first marriage to May Edochie. May has since filed for divorce, secured full custody of their children, and legally denied him access to their former home.

Judy, on her part, has insisted that her relationship with Yul began after her first marriage ended in 2013. She’s also denied cheating rumours, claiming they were cooked up by trolls to damage her name.
