The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that the Federal Government has paid N22 billion in compensation to communities displaced by the 700-megawatt hydroelectric power project in Zungeru, Niger State.
He made this disclosure during a meeting with the Compensation and Resettlement Committee of the Zungeru power plant in Abuja.
Adelabu also assured that funds would be released to communities yet to receive compensation, amounting to approximately N2.2 billion.
He explained that initially, 133 communities were identified for compensation or resettlement at the start of the Zungeru power project, but this number has now increased to over 300.
“I’m pleased that we have paid N22 billion out of the compensation, and according to our records, we have N2.2 billion remaining for payment. Some new figures have been presented here today, but we will need to verify these claims,” Adelabu stated.
Adelabu acknowledged the challenge of limited government funds, noting that there are various pressing issues competing for attention. He emphasized that compensation would be allocated based on available revenue.
The minister expressed concern over the increase in the number of affected communities, which has now tripled from the original number.
Adelabu stressed the need for a thorough verification of the affected communities before additional compensation is issued, stating, “It is surprising that new communities are being added to those eligible for compensation or resettlement.”
