A devastating accident has claimed the lives of 22 members of the Kano State sports delegation as they returned from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
The incident occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2025, when their vehicle plunged off the Dakatsalle Bridge near Kura Local Government Area in Kano State.
The delegation, which included athletes, journalists, medical personnel, and administrators, was en route back to Kano after participating in the festival. According to reports, the vehicle was carrying 35 passengers at the time of the accident.
Survivors recounted that some individuals died instantly, while others were rushed to Kura General Hospital for emergency medical attention.
One of the survivors, Ado Salisu Gama, spoke from his hospital bed, expressing his grief and shock over the tragedy. He confirmed that 22 individuals, including the driver, had been pronounced dead, with another member succumbing to injuries shortly after.
Gama emphasised the magnitude of the loss, noting that many of the deceased were core members of the team that had recently secured 29 medals during the festival.
The accident has sent shockwaves through the sports community and the nation at large. Condolences have been pouring in from various quarters, with many mourning the loss of promising athletes and committed officials.
The Kano State government and sports authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash to help prevent future occurrences.
