The Anambra State Government, through the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, and security personnel captured three alleged human trafficking syndicates operating in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest occurred when the community’s Chairman, Arinzechukwu Azodo, notified the State Commissioner of Women Affairs Ministry, Ify Obinabo, of the situation.
Azodo stated that the commander of his team alerted him to a report of suspected trafficking actions taking place in the neighbourhood, and he immediately contacted the commissioner, who instructed him to proceed with the assistance of security personnel to detain the individuals involved.
He stated that following the arrest, they learned that the suspects were ready to complete a human trafficking deal for a million naira.
On her part, one of the suspects, Ebere from Ukpo in the same local government area of the state, revealed that it was one of the suspects, Temple Nwankwo, her very good friend, who approached her one day and informed her that she had twin babies for sale, despite the fact that she had already sold one of them.
Ebere said:
“I accepted to partner with her and went further to link her up to a prospective buyer who needed a male child urgently. After the negotiation, we agreed to meet at Oye Agu to further seal the transaction but instead Temple requested an instant payment of one million naira in her account which the buyer objected to because he hasn’t seen the baby in question which brought disagreement between us before Temple changed her mind and left them.”
