A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off the northern coast of the Greek island of Crete early Thursday morning, May 22, 2025.

The tremor, recorded at a depth of approximately 37 kilometres, was confirmed by the Geodynamics Institute of Athens and felt across several parts of the Aegean Sea.

Reports indicate that the quake was experienced in neighbouring countries, including Turkey, Libya, and Israel, prompting regional attention.

Following the earthquake, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre issued a tsunami alert. Coastal residents and tourists on islands such as Crete and Santorini were advised to move to higher ground as a precaution.

Although Greek authorities stated that there was no immediate threat to life, they emphasised the importance of remaining alert and following official safety instructions.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries at the time of the tremor. However, some minor structural damage was observed in affected areas.

In Crete’s main port city of Iraklio, part of an abandoned building experienced a partial collapse, leading emergency personnel to cordon off surrounding areas for public safety.

This event is the second significant earthquake in the region within the past week, raising concerns about continuing seismic activity. Crete, located along a tectonic plate boundary, is known for frequent seismic disturbances.

Emergency services were promptly deployed to assess the situation and assist locals, while tourists in Crete, especially those from the UK and Ireland, expressed concern and sought travel guidance.
