More than 88 visually impaired people took the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Kano on Thursday. This exercise was conducted at the BUK Center, Bayero University, Kano, under the auspices of the JAMB Equal Opportunities Group (JEOG).
The JEOG program aims to provide free opportunities to write exams for people with disabilities, particularly visually impaired people.
Both male and female candidates were provided with various devices such as braille machines, typewriters, and braille paper to facilitate the UTME examination process.
Kano Center JAMB Coordinator, Prof. Yahuza Bello, clarified this while overseeing an exercise at the School of Continuing Education (BUK).
He said that 337 visually impaired candidates have registered to take the exam at 11 centers. Bello stated;
Prof. Oleyede-led JAMB is making this effort to ensure that no eligible Nigerian is denied the opportunity to take the UTME and acquire higher education regardless of disability.Since inception in 2017, the JEOG has processed over 3,300 candidates for the UTME, with more than a third admitted to courses of their choice in higher education institutions in Nigeria
