Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has confirmed that Erling Haaland decided to give him the ball to take a late penalty against Leeds on Saturday. The Premier League champions won 2-1 at the Etihad to go four points clear of Arsenal at the top.
After Gundogan scored a brace to make it 2-0, City were awarded a spot-kick. Haaland gave up the chance to get on the scoresheet to help him complete his hat-trick. But the German struck his effort against the woodwork.
A minute later, the visitors pulled one back through Rodrigo to make the final moments uncomfortable for City.
“The moment Erling grabbed the ball, I was sure he was going to take it, but he looked out for me. I checked with him a few times to make sure he was sure.
“He was certain to hand the ball to me. I was confident to score.
“I can’t even remember if the keeper saved it or if it was the post. We should have scored a third,” Gundogan said.
