Nigerian actress and mother, Etinosa Idemudia, has taken to social media to address the issue of emotional blackmail by African parents. In a recent tweet, she called on parents to stop using guilt trips on their children.
Etinosa expressed her frustration with the common narrative used by African parents. Many of them claim to have sacrificed everything for their children. She questioned the logic behind this narrative, stating that it was the parent’s responsibility to raise and provide for their children.
In her tweet, she wrote,
African parents need to stop the emotional blackmail tbh. I raised you, I sacrificed for you. I don’t understand, who brought me here in the first place? Who put me in the position to need sacrifice. Kanayo Kanayo?”
Her post has sparked a conversation on social media, with many agreeing with her sentiments. Some have shared their own experiences of being guilt-tripped by their parents. Others have also called for a more positive approach to parenting.
