Former President Goodluck Jonathan has explained his decision to admit loss after President Muhammadu Buhari won the 2015 presidential race. Goodluck Jonathan claimed he gave up because Nigeria was more important than himself. In an interview with Arise Television on Monday, he made this revelation.

Jonathan pointed out that the circumstances surrounding Buhari’s transition to President-elect Bola Tinubu were distinct from those of his period.

Jonathan claims that, in contrast to what is possible now, he transferred power to a different political party.

He stated,

“The situation now is different from my time. Buhari is handing over to his own party, unlike my time when I handed over to another.

“During my time, some of the most senior officers were afraid if the next government would throw all of us into jail without fair hearing.

“By this time, I had already conceded defeat, and this was because I was more interested in the country than myself.”

Goodluck Jonathan is a former President of Nigeria. He was born on November 20, 1957, in Otuoke, Bayelsa State. Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master’s degree, and a Doctorate in Zoology. Before entering politics, he worked as a lecturer at Rivers State College of Education. Later, he served as Deputy Governor and Governor of Bayelsa State before becoming the Vice President under President Umaru Yar’Adua in 2007. After Yar’Adua’s death, Jonathan became the President of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015. During his tenure as President, Jonathan implemented a series of socioeconomic reforms that aimed to improve the lives of Nigerians. He also oversaw the peaceful transition of power to his successor, Muhammadu Buhari, in 2015.
