The Nigerian Parents’ Forum has petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to persuade the Federal Ministry of Education to revoke the more than 100% increase in tuition for Federal Government institutions or Unity Schools, calling the increase as arbitrary, insensitive, and ill-timed.

The forum further stated that the increase was incompatible with President Tinubu’s pledge of welfare measures to assist Nigerian parents in coping with the economic shocks caused by the elimination of gasoline subsidies.

Monday Eze, the forum’s national coordinator, made this call when responding to the increase in a conversation with media on Wednesday.

He explained, “This increment, which will take effect from September 2023. When the fuel subsidy removal will still be shocking Nigerian parents economically. Is arbitrary, insensitive, ill-timed and inconsistent with President Tinubu’s promise of welfare packages to help Nigerian parents cope with the fuel subsidy removal.”

Eze also said he was sad that the six federal science and technical institutions. That would be formed in the six geopolitical zones in 2021. Did not have trained professors, dormitories, classrooms, and scientific and technological workshops. And challenged the incoming administration to provide such necessities for the colleges.

He further requested that the Federal Government investigate claims of extortion of money and materials. Under the pretense of class and hostel fees. As well as termly demand for different office equipment and domestic furnishings from students in Federal Government colleges.
