The Senate expressed concern over the recent spate of insecurity in the country on Thursday, calling on security authorities to rise to the occasion and put a stop to the threat.
Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua (APC, Katsina Central) voiced severe concerns in his motion moved on Thursday over the kidnapping of five female students from the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) in Katsina State by gunmen from their hotel rooms in the early hours of Wednesday, October 4.
He also stated that 24 school students from the Federal University of Gusau were kidnapped; thankfully, 16 of them were safely liberated three days later during the rescue.
In response to the kidnapping of five female students from the Federal University Dunsin-Ma in Katsina State on Wednesday, the Red Chamber called on the military and other security agencies to conduct special operations to dislodge bandits in the North-West zone and other parts of Nigeria with similar experience.
The summoning of the service chiefs—General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS),—was followed by the upper chamber’s proclamation of its mandate.
It also extended an invitation to the National Security Advisor, Nuhu Ribadu, and Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun.
The legislators also charged security services with being more aggressive in rescuing the abducted female students as well as the corps members seized by terrorists in Zamfara State.
They encouraged the military to execute special operations to expel bandits in the North-West and other regions of the nation, and they also urged the Federal Government to solve the personnel shortage in the armed forces and police.
The senators also emphasised the importance of creating state police as one of the solutions to the country’s security concerns.
