The Osun State Government has allayed public concerns over the widespread cervical vaccination programme.
The vaccine, according to the state government would mitigate the impact and spread of cervical cancer in the state.
This was revealed by Dr Akindele Adekunle, Special Adviser to the Governor of Osun State on Public Health, at a sensitization workshop on mass vaccination against cervical cancer on Wednesday in Osogbo.
The event was organised to educate key players in society ahead of the vaccine campaign, which will begin on October 24, 2023.
While highlighting the importance of combating cervical cancer, Adekunle emphasised that the state government prioritised the wellbeing of the people as one of the Ademola Adeleke administration’s governance achievements.
He further stated that this prompted the administration’s decision to call on all essential stakeholders to sensitise, educate, inform, and enlighten them all on the dangers of this scourge and the government’s efforts to combat it.
Akindele said:
“As a critical partner in the progress of the state and a part of the society that are closer to the people, especially people of the grassroots, we are here today to allay your fears concerning receiving the vaccine provided by the government and our development partners to cushion the effect and spread of this disease in our State.
“We cannot do this alone. We need your support. The HPV vaccine, when given, helps protect against cervical cancer.”
Dr Isiaka Ayodeji, WHO’s Southwest Regional Coordinator, stated that Osun is one of only 16 states in the federation that will launch a mass vaccination campaign against cervical cancer on October 24.
“This is a testament to how Governor Ademola Adeleke is committed to the improvement of the healthcare delivery system in the State,” according to him.
