The National Human Rights Commission office in Kano has said 1,547 complaints of human rights violations were documented in the Northwest zone between January and October 2023.
Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, the NHRC Kano State Co-ordinator, revealed this to journalists on Tuesday.
He stated that 1,320 of the total number of cases were resolved, with the remaining 2, 27 cases still outstanding.
He emphasised that the complaints were centred on six theme areas, including women’s and gender rights, children’s rights, civil and political rights, discrimination, and economic and socio-cultural rights.
With 720 complaints, Abdullahi stated that desertion of family obligations formed the lion’s share of the cases, followed by domestic violence (250), custody and access to children (27), and coerced marriage (10).
“Rights of children 310, survival and development 300, sexual abuse 10, civil and political rights 32, unlawful arrest and detention 12, threat to life 5, access to justice 15 and discrimination 25,” according to him.
The coordinator stated that the NHRC was committed to attaining worldwide and local recognition for human rights improvement.
Abdullahi stated that the commission has reached a significant international milestone by being elected as a governing board member of the worldwide alliance of national human rights institutions, as well as a member of the network of African national human rights institutions working group on migration.
“There are a lot of human rights violations in terms of migration but Nigeria has done well in respect of preserving the rights of migrants,” he added.
