The Lagos State Government announced on Monday that Alaba Rago Market in Ojo has reopened following compliance with its environmental guidelines.
Last week, the market was closed due to severe environmental violations.
Mr Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the reopening in a statement on Monday, saying the market reopened after satisfying some of the requirements set for reopening sealed markets in the state.
He urged all marketplaces to emphasise environmental standards as the authorities continued to crack down on unclean markets.
The commissioner said:
“The state government has opened Alaba Rago Market, Ojo, after it was sealed for gross environmental infractions and negligence.
“We want to appeal to other markets to take seriously the issue of cleanliness, to make the state cleaner and livable for all.”
Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, stated that the reopening of the market should not be misunderstood as indulgence towards environmental breaches.
Gbadegesin emphasised that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s zero-tolerance policy was still in effect.
