The Taraba State Governor Dr Agbu Kefas expressed his condolences to the families of the 100 passengers in the boat accident in the River Benue on Saturday who were feared dead, on Monday.
In a letter of condolences sent by Emmanuel Bello, his Special Advisor on Media and Digital Communication, the governor demanded a thorough investigation to determine what caused the boat disaster.
The governor said:
“This is a sad moment for Taraba State. I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident. I am grieved by this development and have since ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.”
The boat carrying around 100 passengers capsized while travelling from Mayo-Reneyo to Karim Lamido, according to Mr. Jidda Mayoreneyo, the acting chairman of the Inland Water Transporters in Taraba State.
The bodies of three youngsters have been found, according to the police, and a search and rescue effort is still underway.
The victims were returning to Karim Lamido Local Government from the Mayo-Renowo fish market on Saturday when the boat overturned in the River Benue, according to Usman Abdullahi, the Police Public Relations Officer for Taraba State.
“No one in the boat survived the incident according to a preliminary report. So far, three bodies have been recovered from the incident,” Abdullahi added.
