The Federal Capital Territory Administration has allocated N1.7 billion in the 2024 budget to create a prototype Smart Secondary School in the FCT.
The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, made the announcement in Abuja on Thursday during an event celebrating the academic and athletic achievements of public school children in the FCT.
Wike, who was represented by Dr Danlami Hayyo, Mandate Secretary, Education Secretariat, FCTA, stated that the move was intended to sync with worldwide trends in digital teaching and learning.
He said that the smart school will be built in Karshi, an Abuja Municipal Area Council neighbourhood, and would have boarding and digital facilities for e-teaching and learning.
He stated that the N1.7 billion was part of the N13.1 billion sanctioned for the reconstruction, refurbishment, and building of new schools in the FCT by 2024.
The minister stated that if the experiment is successful, it would be spread to other schools in the area to improve the quality of teaching and learning.
Wike, who expressed confidence that the project would be finished within a year, named some of the equipment that will be installed in the school, including computers and inter-service.
According to the minister, additional amenities will include a smart board and other digital equipment for e-teaching and learning.
He said:
“When you are talking about digital teaching and learning, definitely you have to do away with papers, pencils, pens, and the rest of them.
“The establishment of a smart school in Karshi will mark the beginning of smart schools in the territory from where we will learn and expand,” he added.
