D’Tigress, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, upset Senegal 72-65 on Thursday to win their first game in Group A of the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament in Antwerp, Belgium.
The Afrobasket winners led 20-18 in the opening quarter before trailing Senegal 37-46 in the second.
Senegal led 57-49 at the end of the third quarter, and despite trailing 57-49 heading into the last 10 minutes and appearing tired, Nigeria dug deep.
They opened the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run, swinging the game back in their favour.
Amy Okonkwo led Nigeria with an unbelievable 21 points and 10 rebounds, proving why she was chosen MVP of the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2023.
Nigeria went through a terrific roller coaster to win.
They will play the United States on Friday before taking on Belgium on Sunday.
