An Appeal Court in Port Harcourt has set a ruling for today, Friday, June 14, 2024, in a lawsuit brought by Martin Amaewhule on behalf of twenty-six others, contesting the Rivers State High Court’s decision that favoured Victor Oko-Jumbo, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
Previously, Justice Dagogo Jack of the State High Court decided in favour of Oko-Jumbo in a suit that barred Amaewhule and 26 others from exercising legislative activities and vacated their positions as Speaker and members of the State House of Assembly.
An interlocutory injunction was also obtained against Amaewhule and the other twenty-six parties, which has now been merged in the appeal.
After hearing arguments from both sides on Thursday, the Appeal Court’s three-judge panel, chaired by Justice Jimi Olukayode-Bada, indicated its readiness to rule on the issue and ordered all counsel to be present in court by 9 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2024.
If the Appeal Court rules in Amaewhule’s favour, all of the laws and bills enacted by him and the other members will be lawful, and they will be able to continue their legislative duties.
The impacted lawmakers are loyal FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
