Lagos witnessed a wave of banter as media personality Daddy Freeze fired back at Mainlanders who had previously mocked Islanders over recent floods.
In the aftermath of heavy rains that disrupted travel to Davido’s wedding and sparked a flood of online banter, Lagosians found themselves embroiled in a playful yet pointed exchange between Mainlanders and Islanders. The controversy, ignited by Daddy Freeze’s commentary, took center stage as he redirected attention to flooding issues plaguing the Mainland, overturning earlier jibes at Islanders.
Daddy Freeze, known for his outspoken nature, seized the opportunity to humorously rebuff Mainlanders who had taunted Islanders during the wedding delays.
Mainland too is flooded. Shebi dem dey laugh for Island. Now na their turn,” he remarked, sparking a flurry of reactions and comments.
Responding to Daddy Freeze’s post, a follower, Owolabi Anifowose, defended Ikorodu, stating,
Ikorodu is not flooded o.” Unfazed, Daddy Freeze swiftly retorted with a sardonic jab at Ikorodu, claiming, “Don’t worry, no one wants to live there even if it’s dry.”
The exchange ignited a series of spirited comments from both Mainlanders and Islanders, reflecting the longstanding geographic and social divides within Lagos. Supporters and critics alike chimed in, adding layers of humour and regional pride to the discourse.
The banter underscores deeper socio-economic dynamics within Lagos, where distinctions between Mainland and Island living often carry cultural and lifestyle connotations. Anita Joseph, a Nollywood actress, previously weighed in on the debate, extolling the virtues of Mainland living in areas like Omole Phase 1, emphasizing the quality of life available outside the Island.
Meanwhile, media personalities Moet Abebe and Tolani Baj have expressed contrasting views on the Mainland vs. Island debate in their personal lives. Moet Abebe asserted a preference for Island residents in her dating choices, citing personal standards, while Tolani Baj expressed openness to Mainland suitors who could accommodate her Island-centric lifestyle.
