Rivers: Pro-Fubara lawmakers head to Supreme Court to challenge recent Appeal judgement

Lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara have indicated their intention to challenge the recent Court judgement on the jurisdiction of the Rivers State High Court in suit number PHC/1512/CS/2024, calling the decision a miscarriage of justice.

Victor Oko-Jumbo, Speaker of the pro-Fubara MPs, made the announcement during a plenary session on Friday in Port Harcourt.

Oko-Jumbo stated that their legal team has been directed to file an immediate appeal to the Supreme Court to oppose the Court of Appeal’s ruling.

He noted that contrary to popular belief, the Court of Appeal did not rule that Martins Amaewhule and 24 others defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Oko-Jumbo emphasised that there cannot be two Houses of Assembly in Rivers State or any other state in Nigeria, and that Amaewhule and his team are no longer members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, in accordance with an earlier declaration by Ehie Edison (former Speaker, now Chief of Staff to the Governor), which has not been overturned by any court of competent jurisdiction.

The Rivers State Transport Company Reform Bill 2024 and the Rivers State Emergency Management Bill 2024 were passed at the plenary session following their initial readings.
