President Bola Tinubu has approved the formation of the Ministry of Livestock Development.
This happened when he launched the Renewed Hope livestock reform implementation committee at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday.
The committee’s mandate is to suggest sector-specific remedies to the long-standing farmer-herder conflict.
On September 14, 2023, the National Livestock Reforms Committee suggested that Tinubu establish a “Ministry of Livestock Resources” to address, among other things, the decades-long bloody struggle between farmers and nomadic cattle herders across the country.
Former Kano State Governor and All Progressives Congress Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje revealed this to State House Correspondents immediately after leading the committee to an audience with the President at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
It was one of 21 recommendations included in a paper given to the President to improve the Federal Government’s overall reaction to ongoing occurrences of violence.
The study detailed the recommended remedies, in which the group called for a reform agenda focusing on conflict reduction and resource management.
It read:
“This agenda should include the establishment and resuscitation of grazing reserves as suggested by many experts and well-meaning Nigerians and other methods of land utilisation.
“Create the Ministry of Livestock Resources in line with practice in many other West African countries. In the alternative, Federal and State Governments should expand the scope of existing Departments of Livestock Production to address the broader needs of the industry.”
