25 victims of human trafficking have been rescued from the Ugheli region of the state, according to the Delta State Police Command.

The spokesman for the Command, SP Bright Edafe, made this known in a statement in Asaba, Delta State on Thursday.

As to his statement, on June 15, 2024, the Command was notified of the existence of a person named Chinyere (unknown surname), who specialised in smuggling women from the Southeast to Ughelli, Delta State, for commercial purposes.

She entices the girls by pretending that they are travelling to Delta State to work as salesgirls in a restaurant, according to the police spokesperson.

He said:

“The Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, detailed the DPO, Ekpan CSP Aliyu Shaba, to immediately work on the gathered intelligence and ensure that the hotel is located and the suspect is arrested.

“Following this order, one of the victims (name withheld) was arrested, as she revealed the illegal activities of the suspect; Chinyere, who is currently at large.”
