Lawmakers in the Cross River State House of Assembly have urged the state government to begin measures towards the systematic expulsion of Fulani herders as a long-term solution to the devastation of farmlands in sections of the state.
According to reports, hundreds of Fulanis have attacked various communities in the Bekwarra LGA of the state.
Fulani herders recently damaged numerous crops in Ukpada village, Bekwarra Local Government Area of the state, causing massive losses.
On July 1, 2024, women from Ukpada village staged a peaceful protest against the wanton devastation of their crops by Fulani herders who had seized ownership of them.
The lawmakers urged the state government to quickly execute the Cross River State Livestock Management and Grazing Law, enacted by the 9th Assembly.
The lawmakers passed the resolutions in response to a Matter of Urgent Public Importance presented by Hon. Charles Omang Omang, member of the Bekwarra State Constituency and Minority Whip of the House.
He expressed regret that his people, primarily farmers, were now reluctant to visit their farms due to the presence of Fulani herders who purportedly carried lethal weapons.
